Abrekum Arts Academy

Akrowa members are the teaching faculty at the Abrekum Arts Academy (AAA), located 39

miles South-West of Accra, on 17 acres of pristine land overlooking the Atlantic. Since its

founding in 2020, AAA has offered free instruction in traditional drumming and dance to

primary and secondary students from the nearby villages of Abrekum and Mankwadze. Thirty of

these students have demonstrated the talent and dedication necessary to perform in The

Akrowa Newstars, already perhaps the most potent youth group in Ghana.

Inspired by Mustapha Tettey Addy’s Academy of African Music and Art (AAMA) in Kokrobite

during the 1990’s, the Abrekum Arts Academy plans to be an international destination for the

study and performance of Ghanaian traditional arts. With buildings designed by award-winning

architect Bruce Engel, amidst dramatic cliffs and two private beaches, AAA will be the ideal

setting for profound cultural exchange and exquisite hanging-out.
